It could be that's why the piece haunts you. It wants OUT! I had a melody came to me when walking, only when walking. Many years later, when I moved from Vancouver to Toronto, I met a lovely girl and when she left, the lyric came and the melody came back to carry it. That all took about 10 years...
Oh, btw, I'd like to see you take the fragment and continue it. Write it out and finish the song. Lots of good music begins that way. In A Sentimental Mood, PS, I Love You, and Someone To Watch Over Me all begin with the same six notes.
Paul McCartney used to wake up with melodies and go through every recording he had, so sure was he that he had heard it somewhere else. But he hadn't! It was familiar because it was part of him.
Your melody also sounds familiar. But all really good ones do, you know. That's why we think they're good.
I watched that movie and I love the Coen brothers but I don't think it's the answer, maybe it was the way I sang it (I should have made a piano recording). It might be my own idea, I certainly hope so. However, as I talked to other people throughout these years, some of them had the same feeling as me: that it's a familiar tune but they couldn't recognize it. I'm a musician, so it's important I'm not plagiarizing anyone.
