His father, Joseph, is the son of an Italian immigrant and Internet entrepreneur . Her mother, Cynthia, is of Italian-Scottish origin and a telecommunications assistant before becoming a stay-at-home mother 3 , 4 , 5 . She has a younger sister, Natali, born in 1992.

At the age of 4, she began learning the piano on her own and by ear , 6 under the orders of her mother. At eleven years old, she tried to enter the Juilliard School in Manhattan 7 , but changed her mind 8 , and finally joined the Convent of the Sacred Heart , a private Catholic school 9 .

She wrote her first ballads at the age of thirteen and began singing on free stages 10 , notably in jazz bars, from the age of fourteen. She also won a jazz singing competition during this period 11 . Admitted to high school, Stefani begins to experience frequent school bullying due to her atypical physical appearance , 12 which pushes her to use her passion for art as an escape. Several of the songs she wrote later, like her title Born This Way 13 , will encourage her fans not to live for others and to accept themselves as they are. During this period, Stefani participated in her faculty's annual musical competition called "Ultra Violet Live" and finished third . She later managed to be part of an episode of MTV's Boiling Points , a prank show on the famous American music channel.

After leaving university to concentrate on her musical career, the very young woman began working in strip bars in New York 6 , where she supplemented her income with her work as a waitress 6 . She was also a waitress at the Cornelia Street Café during this period, working three jobs, then briefly became a go-go dancer 25 to make ends meet 6 , 26 , 27 , 28 . She launched a StefaniMusic website as well as a Myspace page in order to promote her career and create a link with her first fans 29 .

Difficult first steps (2005-2007)

Stefani Germanotta signed with Def Jam Records when she was only nineteen, this after the label's boss, Antonio Reid , heard her singing in the record company's hallway. Reid then tells her that she is "a celebrity" , and makes her sign a contract in the process. But once the contract was signed, the young woman said she never saw him again, and declared in this regard that she “used to wait in front of his office for hours, hoping that he would come and meet her and listen to his songs, but that never happened . ” Three meetings were planned between Reid and Stefani but they were canceled one after the other before the label abruptly terminated the contract after three months, leaving the singer "distraught" . Seeking to bounce back after this failure, she began performing on the Lower East Side rock scene with the groups Mackin Pulsifer and Stefani Germanotta Band also known as the SGBand who produced an EP (mini-album) sold during their concerts 32 . She also did solo shows around this time and opened for the rock band Nada Surf 33 . It was around the same time that she began doing burlesque shows and taking cocaine . InOctober 2005, the SGBand was invited to sing in the New York Columbus Day parade and had its performance broadcast live on NBC's Channel 4. The group then performed frequently at the Mercury clubs , St. Jerome's Lounge and The Bitter End 28 . It was in the latter that Stefani Germanotta was spotted by author Maura Casey who invited her to work on writing and arranging the album accompanying the children's book Scott and The Secret Dimension . The young woman then has “an audience of fifteen to twenty people who follow her to each show” according to the group’s guitarist, Calvin Pia.

The singer auditioned unsuccessfully for plays and musicals; pop music labels did not take her under contract, judging her character “too theatrical” for their tastes 34 , 35 . It was during this period, when she was 19, that she was the victim of rape by a music producer 20 years her senior 36 . The SGBand was subsequently chosen by Bob Leone, director of national projects for the famous Songwriters Hall of Fame , to be one of nine acts in the 2006 New Songwriters Showcase, a show aimed at revealing new authors and composers. During this show, the young artist was spotted by Wendy Starland , collaborator of music producer Rob Fusari who has already worked with Will Smith and Destiny's Child . Starland strongly recommends that Fusari collaborate with the young singer-songwriter and he listens to her tracks on the internet then, convinced, invites her to the studio. He compared her vocal style to that of Freddie Mercury, quickly giving her the nickname Gaga, taking inspiration from the song Radio Ga Ga by Mercury's band, Queen . She then began using her current stage name: Lady Gaga 37 .

In 2007 , Gaga collaborated with Lady Starlight, who helped her create her stage universe 38 . The duo began gigging in clubs on the Lower East Side and Gaga began designing and sewing her stage outfits . The concerts are named Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue , billed as the ultimate burlesque show in homage to 1970s variety 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 . In August of the same year, Gaga and Starlight were selected to perform at the American Music Festival Lollapalooza which took place in Chicago . The show given is very popular and receives good reviews 10 , 40 . During this period, Gaga also opened for the independent glam-rock band Semi Precious Weapons in front of 400 people in New York .

Having initially focused on avant -garde and electro dance music , Gaga found her niche when she began to integrate pop into her melodies and vintage glam rock à la Bowie or even Queen into her mix 46 .

She then obtained a contract as a songwriter with Akon 's Konvict Muzik label and created songs for Fergie , the Pussycat Dolls , Tamy Chynn, Nicole Scherzinger , Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block 9 . Already having numerous electro-glam titles à la David Bowie or Queen, she decided to mix her retro dance beat with urban melodies, a pop chorus while retaining a rock and roll side . The first song produced was Boys Boys Boys , inspired by Girls, Girls, Girls (from the album of the same name ) by the glam metal band Mötley Crüe and the song TNT (from the album of the same name ) by the band of hard rock AC/DC 37 , 49 . Before the release of her album, The Fame , she stated that her "goal as an artist is to write and make pop music that has something artistic and interesting to say." The Fame and The Fame Monster (2008–2010)

In early 2008 , Gaga moved to Los Angeles , where she refined her album The Fame with her record label 37 . She then set up a creative collective called Haus of Gaga which worked on the creation of her outfits, sets and sounds 9 .

Some radio stations found Gaga's music too "dance-oriented", too "80s" or "too racy" for the general public of the time, and refused to play it, but the singer persevered until her career took off. finally with the release of the title Just Dance , benefiting from the vocal participation of Colby O'Donis . The song ranks number 1 in sales in many countries, such as Canada 50 , the Netherlands 51 , Ireland 52 , or the United Kingdom 53 but will take almost a year to break through in the United States 54 . More than four million copies of the single were sold in less than five months 55 . A promotional single, Beautiful, Dirty, Rich , was released shortly after Just Dance . The album, The Fame , was later released inOctober 2008and sold more than twelve million copies. Then comes the title Poker Face , which comes directly in second position in sales in France (during the week ofJanuary 26AtFebruary 1 , 2009) then 1st ( during the week ofFebruary 23to March 1 ). Lady Gaga declared, during an interview with Métro Québec  : “In a year, we will meet in this same pub, people will still be talking about me, and even better, I will be better known than ever 6  ! » Lady Gaga appeared on television for the first time during the Miss Universe 2008 competition where she performed Just Dance . THE July 4, 2008, blogger Perez Hilton organizes a party in a private nightclub in Los Angeles where Lady Gaga gives a concert 57  ; the king of the “web jet set”, very influential, then defined his performances on stage as “extremely innovative”. The first of four singles , Bad Romance , was officially released in the United States on October 26, 2009. The title was a commercial success and saw its clip become the most viewed in the history of Youtube . The second single, Telephone , features the collaboration of singer Beyoncé Knowles . Telephone was initially composed for singer Britney Spears but, following her refusal, the song was used for Lady Gaga's album 63 . Telephone comes out respectively on January 26, 2010in the United States and April 6 , 2010In France. The third single, Alejandro , revealed via Twitter , was released on April 20 , 2010in the United States 64 . The fourth single and first promotional single from the album is Dance in the Dark . The title was not released in the United States and did not benefit from any video clip .

To promote her album, Gaga made various television appearances, including one on the set of Barbara Walters 65 , one on that of Ellen DeGeneres 66 , one on the television show X Factor , as well as an appearance in the drama series Gossip Girl ( season 3, episode 10) 67 . Lady Gaga was also invited to the Royal Variety Show , alongside Miley Cyrus , to perform one of her songs in front of Queen Elizabeth II . She performed Speechless on a piano almost three meters high. To promote The Fame Monster , she also created a world tour visiting four continents: The Monster Ball Tour . The Fame Monster received an Australian platinum disc at the end of December, this being its first certification. The tour was a $3 million loss after the singer refused to compromise on staging 68 but would eventually become the highest-grossing artist tour in history 69 . She won the prize in each of the three categories in which she was named 75 .

In mid-March, Fusari, her former producer, filed a complaint against her and demanded $30.5 million from her, claiming that he had co-written Paparazzi and Beautiful, Dirty, Rich , and that he had only received $600,000. , a sum less than the 15% of the profits from these two songs that he should have initially received. He further stated that it was he who introduced Gaga to the Interscope Records label and who found her stage name. The singer and Mermaid Music LLC file a counter-complaint, settling legal issues and closing the case after the complaints are dropped. The singer's grandfather, Giuseppe Germanotta, died of Parkinson's disease inSeptember 2010.

Born this Way and ARTPOP (2011-2014)

While accepting the award for Best Music Video of the Year for Bad Romance at the 2010 MTV Music Awards , Gaga sang a short sample of the theme song from her upcoming album, Born This Way . This single was written in 10 minutes by the singer 76. Subsequently, she published on Twitter, on New Year's Day, the release dates of the single. Finally, the title was released two days earlier. The song was a hit around the world, reaching number 1 in 19 countries . THEApril 15, 2011, she released the second single from the album, Judas . Two weeks before the album's release, she released the single The Edge of Glory , inspired by the death of her grandfather. Finally, a week before the album's release, she released the first and last promotional single: Hair . New songs for her fourth studio album, ARTPOP , were produced while working with producer Fernando Garibay in early 2012 . In an interview fromMay 2012, the singer's manager, Vincent Herbert, announced that she had already started working on this project during her Born This Way Ball 86 . The singer's label considers that the finished album does not contain future hits and tries to modify its content but the star wishes to leave the album as it was conceived 87 .

The album is released onNovember 11, 2013and immediately received fairly mixed reviews 88 . However, it became his second album to reach first place on the Billboard 200 ranking in the United States with 258,000 copies sold in its first week. THEAugust 17, 2016, Gaga announces via Instagram and her website the release of her new single Perfect Illusion . A promotional single followed, A-YO , as well as the second single, Million Reasons . In February 2020, the singer announced the release of a new single, Stupid Love , which ranked fifth in sales in the United States . She then announced the release of an album with House sounds entitled Chromatica for theApril 10, 2020156 . However, theMarch 24, the singer announces the postponement of her album, to a later date in 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic 157 . Lady Gaga continues her cinematic rise by playing the lead role in the crime drama House of Gucci directed by Ridley Scott .
