Would have been a Chicago station in the early or mid 70s, maybe WXRT. Been trying to figure out what this song is for years. Thanks for your help!

Is this song the only thing you recorded? Have you recorded any other songs from the same station? It's not really anything to go off, but knowing what type of bands the station played would help narrow down the search.
ottertrack
That'd be tough to answer since that station played such a wide variety and it'd be hard to remember. Also, I'm not 100% sure that it was on WXRT. In any case, I really appreciate your attempt to help with this!

The lyrics might be "Some are part of laughing and sometimes part of crying. We are part of it all. I've been looking for that sunset / something I don't know" At this point, I'd bet that those are the lyrics to the song. I'll do some digging and see if I can find any playlists or archives from the station. If not, I'll contact them.

StarZone86
Hello. It is me again. I did some digging in the past week, and contacted a ton of people. One being the marketing director for WXRT, Paul Webber, who asked the DJ's about the song. While they sadly came up empty, Paul theorised that the song was short lived on Top 40 radio during the golden era of AM Top 40. He believes it might have been played on the radio station WLS in 74 or 75 (the date checks out from your post, as well!). They gave me several contact info's which I will keep anonymous for now, as to prevent them from getting flooded with messages. I will keep you updated on the song.
ottertrack
Wow - really appreciate all the research you're doing! It would mean a lot to me to find this song (and hopefully to be able to buy a download or even an old vinyl if needed).
My second guess of radio stations would be WBBM (FM). I very much doubt this song would be a Top 40 type so don't thing that WLS or WCFL, the pop stations, would have played it. And I think you're on the right track with the lyrics. I'm pretty confident that they're "sometimes we're part of the laughing, sometimes we're part of the crying, we are a part of it all. I keep looking for that sunset I don't know (when?) it will be."
Thanks again Starzone86!
StarZone86
Further update - Yes, you are correct. I just finished checking the ARSA database for the radio station, and could not find it there. That being said, they were kind enough to further offer me contacts to different radio stations, which they believe might have played the song. They will also share this song to different stations, and will update me back with results. Hopefully, the song will be found, soon. Will also be digging into WBBM (FM) as well!

I wouldn't entirely rule out WXRT, but most of the past presenters/hosts were already contacted - thanks to StarZone - and most did not know anything about the song. I also contacted Terri Hemmert, who is basically a soul and heart of the station, and was working there for almost 50 years now. She did not know anything about it. Our primary focus should be on WBBM (FM) for now.

StarZone86
Came back with exciting news. Well, it is not anything ground-breaking (as of yet), but we're getting close. A WLS expert said they likely wouldn’t have played it since they only played major hits, but he also stated that his guess is it was more likely WBBM-FM during its mellow period in the mid-70’. Keep in mind, I never mentioned or referenced the said station in my initial question to him. WXRT likely did not play the song, and WLS definitely did not.
To answer your question: No, I was not. Hopefully, soon! (-:

They do like the song however! And are just as eager to find it as we are. I'll dig through WBBM (FM).

I have an important question: I'm not sure if you'll be able to remember such details, as this was 50 years ago, but is the 30-second-clip of the song the actual full length, or was the original song way longer? (talking a full minute or more longer)

Hello. StarZone here. By any chance, could you upload the full snippet on https://vocaroo.com/ and post the link here? You mentioned the lyrics "when / where it will be again" right at the end of the song. That small portion of the snippet was sadly cut out by WZS (due to the audio-length limit only being set to 30 seconds). It would definitely bring a lot to the table, regardless if it's a few-second cut. Thank you again! We're working hard to solving this

Hi ottertrack, when you listen back to the song you posted on this site, WatZatSong (so you don't listen to the file on your computer, but to the snippet that ultimately was uploaded on this site, and that everyone else has access to), could it be that a couple of seconds are missing at the end? If yes, could you upload the song file you have onto this site https://vocaroo.com/upload , and send the link, please?

Hi. I have a question. This question might seem a bit stupid but are you certain that this is not a Christian song and/or a song with heavy themes on Christian life and faith?

Would it be possible to narrow down the "early 70s" estimate a little more specifically? The other songs on the tape could shed light on this. If you could provide a tracklist or digitize the whole cassette, that could really help us focus the search. Thanks!

Hi. Original poster of the song here. Want to reiterate that it’s VERY UNLIKELY that this is a religious song.
Also, not sure this’ll help, but here’s some of the other artists that was on the mix tapes with the song - though they were likely recorded over a number of years and probably also over several Chicago area radio stations in the early to mid-70’s:
Bob Weir, Doobie Bros., Poco, Brewer & Shipley, Jimmie Spheeris, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, Mason Proffit, McKendree Spring, Bonnie Koloc, Jim Post, Heartsfield, Buffy Saint Marie, Fairport Convention, The Eagles, Spirit, Barclay James Harvest, Newgrass Revival, Xit, The Guess Who, The Edgar Winter Group, Firefall, Redbone, Gordon Lightfoot, The Hollies, James Gang, The Band and others.

Would you be able to provide a copy of the whole mixtape to us? It could help us if we can identify the specific tracklist and the years they came out, because it might be able to help us identify an approximate year range to look for. And knowing the names of the other specific songs on the tape would be useful.
ottertrack
Here are some of the other songs on the tape, but I wouldn't count on them necessarily being originally recorded at the same time (I may have copied some songs from one tape to another).
Bob Weir - This Time
Double Brothers - South City Midnight Lady
Eagles - Doolin’ Dalton & Desperado
Fairport Convention - Restless
Rod McDonald - Cross Country Waltz
Bonnie Koloc - We Are Ships
The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band - Rise And Fall
Paul Mauriat - Love Is Blue

Hello! I completely cherish this song. For the past months, I've been looking forward to the day somebody will recognize this song. It's quite an obscure gem from the '70s!
I apologize if I'm not really of any help. I do have two questions: there was more to the song than just those 40-seconds, right? I highly doubt this was a bought-and-paid-for commercial or jingle, as it would otherwise be jamming an advertising message in your face.
My second question: this might be a bit personal but were you rather choosey/selective with what songs you would record off the radio? This question is rather important as if this was (for example) a commercial for a product, you probably would have known about it and not record it, right? This also goes for songs with Christian themes in them.
ottertrack
Ya, the snippet is just a part of the song (and unfortunately it's all that I have).
And yes, I just recorded my favorite songs - sometimes I'd catch a whole song but in this instance, what probably happened is that I was listening, realized it was a song that I thought was great, and hit the record button in time to catch the last 40 seconds or so. So yes, if this was part of a commercial or a religious song I wouldn't have recorded it.
Glad to hear the song speaks to you as it did (and does) to me, and I also look forward to finding out what it is (and hopefully finding a copy of the full song somehow, somewhere). It's been years since I first posted this, but there are more people now who are working on this, and some of them seem to be really digging down to find it.

ottertrack
Yazman, I'd be glad to upload a digital copy of the tape. The mp3 version is 87MB for the side the song is on, so double that for the whole tape. These songs on my old tapes were probably copied from one tape to another back in the day, so there's no guarantee that the other songs on the tape came from the exact same year as each other. In other words, I really doubt that listening to the other songs will be of value, especially since I've already provided a song list. But if you're still interested let me know where you'd like it uploaded. Thanks.

ottertrack
Thanks Yazman. But on second thought it's just not worth the effort - the songs were copied from tape to tape (as a way to edit out some of the songs I didn't want to keep) there's no way to know whether the other songs were of the same exact era. Plus you already have the names of some of the other songs. I just don't see how it'll help unless you're just into hearing the tape for your own curiousity.
LoveHarbor87
I think having the digital copy of the tape would probably be good for the team searching for the song. I know the tape itself won't lead us down the right path, but I think it will be good to have the copy available (as it can act as a sort of a fundamental part of this search). You don't have to do it if you don't want to, of course.

I used the version of Kletter on vocaroo he made the song very clear, you can understand almost everything very well.
I've moved away from Leo Sayer and Harpo since the version of Kletter, which reminded me of them were the musical arrangements.
What's stupid is the piece starts shortly before the end or is it a minute song.
I understand at the beginning "We love it all"
We will see and be amazed who that really is :)

My friend unfortunately does not know it either and he has been through the 60s and 70s knows lyrics off the top of his head, has thousands of LPs like me , unfortunately no solution for the band and title you are looking for.

Don't recall that station, but that's not enough to rule it out - it was so long ago that I may have forgotten about that station.

Hey, Otter! I just wanna check-in and ask if everything on Discord is working smoothly for you. You're not experiencing any issues with the program, right?

Thanks for checking StarZone. No problems but only doing the basics - looking at and responding to messages.

I'm truly happy to see how active you are in this. With how many people are now searching for this song, hopefully, we'll be able to find it for you.

Otter, I don't know if the group told you this already, but (one of?) the unknown instrumental tracks, which was also on the same side of the tape as "I Keep Looking", was recently identified. One of the members uploaded it onto YouTube (-: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbp_gaRrvik with the full name/author. I'm confident IKL will be next!

Also, forgot to mention. If you get a little "red" icon next to Discord (assuming you are logged-in), that basically means that somebody tagged you in the main channel (-:

For me, this is more a late 70s piece, since the sound of 60s-70s has already changed. Were you with the piece ever on a record fair. Should life once again become something normal I would try that because the collectors know each other and you can quickly be sent to one or the other colleague who really knows there and you can play him that. Otherwise, good luck with the search! :)

You've been looking for the ban for so long now, take the last file from Kletter and ask Rick Beato :)

lyX79 - thanks. I did see that the other song (the instrumental) had been identified. And I was pretty confident that the song was by Cowboy Jazz. Obviously misplaced confidence.

Has anyone got in touch with Chicago area local news and radio stations? They might be interested in the mystery and play it on air to see if anyone can figure it out.

Has anyone tried looking through the catalog of Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah? They’re from Chicago, and their song “Lake Shore Drive” sounds totally like rigid in terms of vibe. Or while people here have said they’ve been contacting local Chicago stations, it might be worth reaching out to their members (if possible) to see if it’s theirs or, if not, if they know who it is (as, being a part of the ‘70s Chicago music scene, they’d have a better shot of knowing than a lot of us).

Glad to hear of the lead on reddit Mrsakkooo. It doesn't sound very solid but with the lack of traction so far any little lead gives some hope.

Ran into a Jim Dawson fan who was familiar. I feel validated because while everyone else was saying soft rock or progressive rock I was thinking Midwestern heartland, possibly canadian, or Nashville Countrypolitan, so at least I was much closer in genre.

Also it looks like he’s been performing live at least as late as 2017. There’s a full concert that opens with a gorgeous solo piano rendition of this track: https://youtu.be/Nskv3kWNAMk

I don't know why Marty isn't giving proper credit, it was solved by someone called SteelyNJ on stevehoffman: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/i-keep-looking-for-that-sunset-can-anyone-identify-this-70s-rock-song.1026673/page-4#post-25790499

Nah dude, your post your initial reveal post on here makes it out like you solved it. Lame. You're on the SHF thread, you responded on SHF after you posted here so don't say you forgot the SHF posters name. You should have given proper credit in your initial post instead of allowing people on here to call you a "legend", and "Marty you solved it!". My last words on this so people can get back to celebrating.
