WatZatSong, what is that?
WatZatSong ("What's that song?" in proper English) is a community website that allows you to:
1) name a song that you have stuck in your head but of which you know neither the artist nor the title
2) name the other members songs and thus climb up the ranking up!
More generally, WatZatSong is a music discovery and sharing website based on helping each other.

Yes, totally! WatZatSong is financed by partnerships and advertising.
Post a request

How to post a request?
Click on « Search » at the top of the page.
Enter all that you know about the song (for example the language in which it is sung or the music style). You can also add some comments to simplify the guessers' job.
Click on « Record yourself » below: the recording device will pop up, and after that you only have to click on "record" (the red circle) and start humming! The recording cannot be longer than 30 seconds. You can redo the recording as many times as you want and listen to it by clicking on the green « play » button. To confirm, click on « validate » (the yellow «v»). All done!
If you already have a sample of the song in a file or that you have already recorded yourself with your favourite audio software, click on "Upload a file" and select the file to send.

What do I need to record myself?
You will need a microphone unless you already have an audio file of the song you want to have named.

How will I get the answer to my request?
As soon as your recording is confirmed, it becomes available for listening on WatZatSong. Anyone can then guess at the title and artist, which they think to be true. You will receive an email as soon as a guess is posted. You can then check that it is correct straight away by listening to a « real » sample thanks to our partners.

How to be sure that a guess is correct?
As soon as a guess is posted, a link to our partner websites allows you to listen to a sample of the original song proposed. Nonetheless, the members who listen to your sample can confirm a guess if they agree with it. If many members confirm a guess, you can be almost sure to have the correct answer to your request!

Why do I need to confirm or reject a guess?
It's really important that you reject the wrong guesses and confirm the right one. Thus, the members that would have spent time identifying your songs will get to know about it and the one who has found the right guess will be awarded a point.

Why does the recording page ask me if I want to accept the Applet distributed by WatZatSong?
To be able to record yourself in realtime, this program needs to be installed. Executing it (harmless for your computer) requires your agreement.

How to record?
When the record is displayed, you only have to click on "record" (the red circle) and start humming. The recording cannot be longer than 30 seconds. You can record yourself as many times as you like and listen by clicking on "play" in green. To confirm your recording, finally click on the yellow "v". All done!

How to listen to my recording again?
Simply click on "play". Until you confirm the recording, you can listen and re-record yourself as many times as you want.

The recording did not work, what should I check?
Check that your microphone is properly plugged in and that the volume is not set to zero. To do so, click on the "volume" icon (usually in the bottom-right corner in the taskbar under Windows XP). Then click on "Option" and then "Properties". Tick the "microphone" box. The microphone volume control should be displayed in the main menu. You then only have to check the volume and that the "mute" box is not ticked. All done!

How to confirm my recording?
Click on the "v" in yellow in the recorder when you have recorded the definitive version of your sample.

Why sending a sample from a file rather that recording yourself?
If you already have a hummed sample of the song that you want to be named, you can upload it straight away. The file should be in mp3 or wav format and should not exceed 6Mb. Only the first 30 seconds will be kept.
Guessing titles

What can I win by guessing titles?
If your guesses are confirmed by the person who submitted the song, you will earn points. These points will help you climb up the guessers ranking!

How to pick requests that I may be able to answer?
Many samples are available on WatZatSong. To simplify their identification, you can select the samples you want to listen to by style, language, period in the "Guess" tab.

What should I do if the sample contains insults or racist ideas?
WatZatSong does not tolerate this. However, it is impossible for us to check every sample before it is put online. If you listen to a sample that does not seem to fulfill the ethical charter, simply click on the red cross next to the player ("notification of abuse"). The WatZatSong Support Team will listen to the sample and will take the required measures that could go as far as excluding the author of the community.

What shall I do if I think I know the answer but I'm not sure?
That's part of the game! Do not hesitate to send your guess (you can also write it as a comment to the request if you are not sure). The member who posted the extract will confirm or reject it. In either way, your participation in this naming process would be greatly appreciated.

What if the requester rejects my guess?
You might have been wrong! You can check it by listening to a "real" sample of the confirmed guess on one of our partners' websites. If the confirmed guess seems similar to your guess, maybe different versions exist, which might explain the confusion. You can still send a mail to the requester to share with him your point of view.

What if the requester confirms my guess?
You will receive an email notifying you that your answer has been confirmed. You will then gain a point that will help you climb up the guessers' ranking. If you don't quickly get a mail, no worries! This just means that the member who has posted the sample has not checked your guess yet…

I would like to send a sample to a friend
If you listened to a sample that you think a friend of yours would be able to name (whether he is a member of WatZatSong or not), click on the arrow-shaped icon next to the player. Write the email addresses of the friends that you think would know and they will receive a direct link to the sample.

I like a sample very much, what can I do?
You can click on the star-shaped icon next to the proper player. Then, all the samples you would have tagged will appear in the "My favourites" page.

What is an alert?
When you visit WatZatSong, you may bump into an extract for which you would have also known the title. You only have to click on the "i" icon next to the player to add it to your alerts. To see your alerts list (pending or identified), go to the "My Stuff" menu.

Is it possible to listen to samples that have already been identified?
Go to the "Guess" menu, and visit the "See all named samples" tab.

Can I record or purchase the samples that I have listened to on WatZatSong?
No, the samples cannot be recorded or downloaded. They are their authors' property and are not free of copyrights. But do not worry, you will still be able to listen to a sample that you like again and again (see "I like a sample very much, what can I do?")

The members of WatZatSong form the WatZatSong community. WatZatSong relies on the talents of this community. That's why on WatZatSong, everything's free!

How to invite friends on WatZatSong?
You can build up your own friends' community on WatZatSong. When you are on the profile page of a member, simply click on "add to friends".
If he accepts your invitation, he will become a member of your friends' community.

How to interact with my friends?
Fairly simple. Click on the "Communicate" menu. There, you will find the list of your friends and you will be able to track their activities on WatZatSong.
From the "My Friends" page, you can directly access the profiles of your friends, read the messages that they have sent to you, the comments they have written and their favourite samples. You can anytime keep an eye on your friends at anytime when you navigate on WatZatSong thanks to the follow-box at the bottom-right corner of your screen. (see: what's the follow-box?)

What is the WatZatQuiz?
The WatZatQuiz is a game in which you need to guess the artist or the title of songs. This game is made of samples that have been named thanks to WatZatSong already. When you play to the WatZatQuiz (in the "Guess" menu) you can pick several music styles before starting. Then, you will listen to 10 samples that you will have to identify. You can then send the quiz to a friend to compare your scores!

What is the follow-box?
In the bottom-right corner of every page, the follow-box accompanies your navigation showing in live the new requests, guesses, and comments live. You can also (by clicking on "My friends" in this box) only follow your friends' activity. You can access a longer list of the last events in the menu "Community" and the tab "Last events" or simply by clicking directly on "...see more" in the follow-box.

What to do if a sample is simply unrecognizable?
In that case, write a comment about the sample explaining why you do not think it is recognisable. If the requester does not react and the sample remains online (no one succeeded in identifying it), you can click on the red cross to put it in quarantine.
